The Camp
The 400 children and 150 adults live in a disused sugar plantation which provides a safe but rudimentary refuge.
To date HUR has funded the construction of a latrine block, provided cooking facilities, given clothing and shoes and bought food. The government has recently constructed a two roomed classroom on the site, but much more assistance is required.
Immediate Needs:
Clean water supply – Currently people have to walk a long way from the camp to get water. A child was recently raped whilst doing this.
2 more primary classrooms – There are around 70 children to a classroom. The classes in the old buildings are small, dark, rundown and oppressive in the heat
Medical and counselling room – many of the people in the camp are traumatised and need counselling. In the rudimentary living conditions everyone, but particularly the young, are vulnerable to disease. A place where people could go for support and medical aid would be invaluable
Re-roofing and repainting – all the units the people are living in are in a poor state of repair and could do with at least this minimal upgrade.
