The primary way we can help the vast majority of people at the Kivuuvu Refugee Camp is by enabling them to gain education and skills. In Uganda this is only possible for anyone, beyond primary school age, if they have money to pay to go to school or college. By contrast the refugees need to use what little money they can get to feed themselves or else they go hungry.

HUR have identified a range of ways that people at the camp can be given training:

Primary School – At Kivuuvu a primary school has been started with most of the teachers government funded. The needs there are for new classrooms, as currently most of the children are taught in dilapidated rooms that are small, dark and hot, and additional teachers so that class sizes can be kept below 60.

school_sponsored225Secondary School – We have children in year 1 and year 2 who are boarding at Mbalala Secondary School. The school is in the town about 2km from the camp. Ludovick, our main administrator in Uganda, has built good relationships with the headteacher. There about another 95 children who would also benefit if they could attend.

Skills Training – In Mbalala, using buildings owned by Ludovick's church, we have set up courses in tailoring/sewing and construction. There are future possibilities for courses in Information Technology. The intention is for about 6 months training, with about six young adults on each course led by a locally recruited trainer, following which the students will do something to help at the camp before trying to get gainful employment.

College_Students225College Training – In 2009 ten students undertook a year’s vocational course at a college in Kampala. They are now looking for employment, with support from Ludovick and the provision of some basic tools. In future years we will be selecting students to undertake specialist training (counselling, nursing, business administration, journalism etc) over probably 2 to 3 years at this and other colleges in the region.
