The primary way we can help the vast majority of people at the Kivuuvu Refugee Camp is by enabling them to gain education and skills. In
Primary School – At Kivuuvu a primary school has been started with most of the teachers government funded. The needs there are for new classrooms, as currently most of the children are taught in dilapidated rooms that are small, dark and hot, and additional teachers so that class sizes can be kept below 60.
Secondary School – We have children in year 1 and year 2 who are boarding at Mbalala Secondary School. The school is in the town about 2km from the camp. Ludovick, our main administrator in Uganda, has built good relationships with the headteacher. There about another 95 children who would also benefit if they could attend.
Skills Training – In Mbalala, using buildings owned by Ludovick's church, we have set up courses in tailoring/sewing and construction. There are future possibilities for courses in Information Technology. The intention is for about 6 months training, with about six young adults on each course led by a locally recruited trainer, following which the students will do something to help at the camp before trying to get gainful employment.
